Have you been looking for organic clothing? Preferably 100%, with low-impact dyes? And fair trade, let’s not forget about that!
It’s easy to find such clothes for babies and toddlers, but a lot more difficult for adults. I have purchased items from Rawganique before – and will continue to purchase, because their organic cotton underwear is so comfy! – but their selection is somewhat limited, and definitely didn’t have what I was looking for this time around: organic cotton, low-impact dye turtlenecks, and a long, warm skirt to go with them.
It took me a little time, but I finally found gaiaconceptions.com, a micro-business (I think) that makes fashionable “green” clothing for women. I ordered three cowl-neck organic cotton fleece shirts and two organic cotton fleece long skirts.
And I waited. And I waited. Two weeks went by, and I went to the website to shoot them an e-mail to see if I could get an ETA. I snooped around a little more than I had when I made the order, and to my great delight I discovered that
they hand-make everything to order.
And that it takes at least two weeks for them just to make the clothing! I was thinking that it was somebody’s drop-shipping business, and that the clothes came from “green clothing” factories.
Nope. Everything is custom-made as it is ordered. They even start with naturally-colored fabric, and dye it the specified color after cutting the fabric and sewing it together. The only thing they don’t do at Gaia Conceptions is grow their own fiber! But that, they get as much as possible from local farms.
Here’s what finally came in the package, about a three weeks after my initial order:
(Still in my surgical shoe – not trying to show it off, just trying to slow down the inevitable swelling that is about to happen because I have had my foot on the floor for too long.)
These ladies put love and care into their work. Check out the packages the clothes came in: wrapped up like gifts, and one even with a sprig of rosemary! As for how they fit, well, one of my closest friends who is much more fashion-conscious than I told me, “Emily, you look great! And they fit you perfectly!”
Gaia Conceptions will make a wide variety of clothing – shirts of all sleeve lengths, pants, skirts, shorts, and dresses, as well as some things for kids (sorry, guys).
I am not affiliated with this company in any way, but I was so excited about the gorgeous results that I had to share my story with my readers. Believe me, each piece is worth every penny I paid, and I can wear it in good conscious knowing that nobody was exploited in any part of its manufacturer.
Want organic clothing? Yes, you will pay a premium, but YOU DON’T NEED THAT MUCH CLOTHES. Pay well for a few good pieces, and be healthier and help the planet be healthier.
Andrea and the other ladies at Gaia Conceptions, thank you for your excellent craftsmanship!
Stay healthy and happy,
