Energy is an integral part of a healthy life. If you’re like me, you wish you had more energy. A lot more energy.
Now, I do have considerably more energy than when I was eating the Standard American Diet and before I started taking high-quality, whole-food supplements. The problem is, when you first start to take a good supplement or begin eating more fruits and vegetables, you burst with energy for a few days to a couple of weeks. But then you get used to that energy level, and you feel like you are right back where you started.
Part of my problem is that I haven’t had more than seven hours of sleep since I got pregnant almost 4.5 years ago. Often, less than that and rarely more. Another part of the problem – this summer – is the high level of humidity that makes my whole family drag and crab.
What I discovered is that rather than counting on nine hours of sleep and the perfect diet, I can do a few minutes of certain activities to get myself out of my physical doldrums.

Following is a list of activities that I find energizing:
- Singing, especially if I have an audience (my son counts
) - Dancing
- Swimming (which I hardly ever do anymore, but one day we will be in the country and dig a swimming hole…)
- Coaching (not athletic, I’m talking wellness/life/financial/career/etc.)
- Speaking on a topic for which I have a passion
- Listening to upbeat music with positive lyrics
- Playing tickle with husband or son
- Speaking of my husband, um, yes, how shall I say it: intimacy with my one and only
You may find any or all of these activities energizing:
- Taking a cold shower
- Running
- Weight-lifting
- Talking on the phone with a friend
- Listening to a comedian
Obviously, not every activity on the list is something that can be done at any time, any where. But many can be done in many situations.
So the next time you feel paralyzed in the grip of lethargy, try one of the above activities – or another one not listed that you know will get your pulse pumping and your mind moving.
