Maqui Berry
If you have never heard of the maqui berry, you are in for a real treat. The small purple berry grows on about a twelve-foot tree in the nation of Chile, and is regularly consumed by the Mapuche natives. In fact, they attribute their good health and longevity to the berry.
Yes, this is another superfood. Despite the hype surrounding the marketing of supplements and juices made from the fruit, it really does have long-lasting health effects (when, of course, consumed as part of an already healthy diet. Tell me you eat at Burger King every day and all bets are off).
Health benefits of the maqui berry
Eating this little fruit brings many nutritional and other health benefits. Here are a few:
- Ten times higher in the polyphenols than what is found in red wine (these are assumed to be highly antioxidant phytonutrients).
- Good source of vitamin C, calcium, potassium and iron.
- Used by South American athletes to improve stamina.
- More effective than the acai berry on weight loss in controlled studies.
- Is anti-inflammatory, therefore helpful in treating arthritis.
- Promotes increased blood flow.
- Protects the body from stress.
- Supports immune function.
More and more people are discovering the real results provided by regular intake of the maqui berry. Two people I know who take Masaji, a supplement whose top ingredient is maqui, began losing weight when they first began drinking it.
Will it help you to live to be one hundred? It may. But, as mentioned above, only as part of a healthy lifestyle. And when combined when other superfoods such as goji, marine phytoplankton, blueberry and spirulina the effect is synergistic. That is, they work together to provide much greater health benefits than any of them by themselves.
My experience with maqui
Okay, so I didn’t need to lose weight when I first started drinking Masaji. But I had another, perhaps worse, problem: ongoing, persistent negative thoughts. And no, the “time of the month” didn’t matter.
A week after I began drinking the supplement, I looked up and realized that I was happier than I had ever been in my life. The constant barrage of negative thoughts was gone. I attribute this in part to the synergistic effects of all the ingredients together, in part to the fact that is a natural source of easily-absorbable B vitamins.
As far as I’m concerned, the maqui berry is truly a superfood, and not just another hyped up exotic berry.
