Living Green In A Modern World

Back in the mid 1800’s, the phrase "living green" didn’t exist. It didn’t have to. People lived “green” as a matter of course. There were no chemical fertilizers, synthetic fabrics, or strip mines.

Nowadays, we are faced with two choices: convenience or conservation. Often, the two seem to be exclusive. We are too busy to wash the laundry by hand, but using machines requires “too much” water and electricity.

The fact is, most folks in the Western world cannot be totally green without losing their sanity (my hats off to the Amish!). Although we want to "go green" to reduce waste and pollution, we don't want to return to the days of outhouses and no indoor plumbing. Here is a humorous look at how to find the "green" balance in our lives.

Many aspects of green living, however, can actually simplify our lives and help us save money. Here are 14 ideas on how you can green your home.

This article specifically addresses green cleaning.

Living green often connotates a more self-sufficient lifestyle, and what could be more self-sufficient than growing your own food?

Many people, however, hesitate to delve into the world of gardening, afraid they won't have enough time or will fail. Follow these vegetable gardening tips, and you will find that gardening can be a fun and fruitful endeavor.

"But I live in the city and have a tiny backyard!" Read about raised bed gardening and square foot gardening, and discover how vegetable gardening can be a viable hobby for anyone, anywhere.

After reading all those articles, you may be ready to join the movement that is slowly gaining more followers, the movement where you live simply to simply live. You may be ready to join the movement known as voluntary simplicity and leave the rat race and consumerist mentality behind.

Living green is not about following rules or going to extremes. Living green is about the awareness that you have a responsibility to be a good steward over God's creation, and then taking whatever steps you think you can and should do to make the world a healthier, happier place to be.

Happy green living.
