A big part of healthy living is keeping your teeth in great shape. But in our culture, dental problems run rampant, and getting any kind of dental workdone beyond a cleaning and fillings often involves pain and a considerable healing time. Dentists routinely send patients home with prescriptions for pain medication and antibiotics, just in case.
I know that when I had my wisdom teeth taken out, my husband dutifully ran to the drug store to fulfill my dental surgeon’s prescriptions. I refused the antibiotics, but eventually broke down and took the pain meds.
If only I had known about essential oils at the time. Like every other health condition you can think of, there are several essential oils that help with various problems surrounding dental conditions and procedures.
I can tell you from personal experience that birch oil, rubbed on the gums, relieves any kind of soreness or inflammation there (plus it tastes like root beer – yum!). Clove oil is famous for relieving toothaches.
One fan of Be Young Essential Oils tells the story of how the oils kept her from having to take any pain pills for a cracked molar. She applied Defence+, the anti-bacterial blend, to the tooth until she could see the dentist – six days later.
Just before going to the dentist, she applied the calming geranium and lavender oils to her wrists and back of her neck. (Again from personal experience, I can tell you that high-quality undiluted lavender oil will totally calm you within five minutes, and keep you calm for a good while.) In addition, when the dentist left the room she sniffed the geranium deeply, which she testifies greatly diminished her stress during the dental work of having her molar removed.
Geranium helped her further after the procedure. She applied a drop to the hole where the tooth had been three times throughout the remainder of the day, which stopped the bleeding and numbed the gums.
She also continued to apply the Defence+ blend, and stayed free of any infection over the next few days.
Marjoram oil was another aid for her. She applied it to her jaw, neck and shoulder muscles, knowing the muscles were going to be very tense when the novocain wore off. The marjoram prevented the soreness.
Whenever she felt her gums or jaw begin to ache, she applied birch oil, which stopped the pain instantly.
When she went back to the dentist, he was amazed at how well she was healing! Two weeks after the dental work, the hole from the molar removal was completely healed closed.
Whether for dental work or any other problem, essential oils are an effective, non-toxic treatment to improve your overall health and well-being.
